About us
Our group was originally formed with the intention
of sharing information on the electro-diesels as well as
preserving examples of the two types of the loco when it seemed likely
that few if any examples of the class 73s would survive. In 1997 we were the first group to secure an example of one of the 6 prototypes when
we acquired E6003 Sir Herbert Walker from EWS when that company decided
that the these were surplus to requirements. Other members of our
group have secured a an example of one of the production series privately.
History has shown that far from fading from view the Class 73s have continued to do sterling work on the main line and some are even being re-engineered to provide service well into the future. Our efforts are now focused on preserving E6003 in as near original condition as possible at its base on the Swindon & Cricklade Railway.
We are a small group, made up of a mix of professional railwaymen and others who have a soft spot for the class 73s. There is a thriving diesel group at the Swindon and Cricklade and many of these are now members of our group. The day to day issues of running our loco are dealt with by a small committee comprising a Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. General meetings are held at the S&C from time to time and when key decisions need to be made but the Secretary and Treasurer are always available to respond to members' questions and provide updates on our loco.
To join the EDLG you must own a 'share' in E6003. We are not a limited company or registered charity and there are no actual shares in the group to use the normal definition. Instead, we refer to members as owning shares in our loco as a shorthand way of acknowledging the contribution of each member to our loco. Each 'share' represents a contribution of £100 to the group's funds and we work on the basis of one member one vote for all but the most important decisions.
